Case Stories Featuring Universal Design for Learning

Digital stories for faculty development can provide real-life experiences of exemplary teaching strategies and the process of implementing them.

College STAR (Supporting Transition Access and Retention)

College STAR is a project of the University of North Carolina system designed to support students with learning differences and to disseminate best-practice teaching methods to faculty members for promoting the success of students of varied learning styles and backgrounds. UDL on Campus by CAST has compiled a number of examples of how faculty in the College STAR project have redesigned their courses using the UDL framework. Each of the examples summarizes the particular pedagogical challenges faced by the instructors and their strategies for using UDL to address those challenges.

Each of the case stories linked below feature a video summary of an instructor’s efforts to modify teaching methods or teaching materials to incorporate the principles of Universal Design for Learning, along with such resources as sample assignments, rubrics, syllabi, and detailed descriptions of the course.

The case stories were created the California State University Center for Distributed Learning as part of EnACT~PTD, a demonstration project aimed at ensuring that students with disabilities receive a quality higher education. The project was funded by the U.S. Department of Education, Office of Postsecondary Education, P333A-080027, in partnership with the MERLOT ELIXR program.
